What we like

You often hear low-to-no budget filmmakers say, “It looks like it cost $X million to make and actually only cost us four quid and a packet of chocolate digestives.”

This is not something which will impress us here at MoMo Film Festival .

We don’t know about you, but we don’t go to the cinema to watch money on the screen. We go to watch a moving story, an emotional journey, a challenging concept explored in depth and without pulling any punches.

We go to watch stories expressed in their own unique way, using the moving image. We go hoping to be amazed, to be moved to tears, to laugh uncontrollably – none of these emotions are provoked by production values.

As far as production values go – do the best you can with what you have .

But, do not sacrifice the creativity or the spontaneity or the uniqueness of your film as you slavishly attempt to reproduce that cool steadycam shot through the kitchen in Goodfellas. We know it’s fun to do and it makes you feel like you’re Scorsese, but unless its part of a great cinematic story of your own invention, it’s not going to help get your short into our festival.

This is a festival which is attempting to level the playing field for filmmakers. Its about talent, ingenuity, innovation and creativity – not budget. So, it wouldn’t really make much sense for us to judge your film based on how much it looks like it cost to make.

Have fun making films. Amaze us, inspire us, move us .
